Passing the IELTS™ or TOEFL iBT® examination is a pre-requisite for international students hoping to study in North American post-secondary institutions. In addition, a student’s IELTS™ or TOEFL iBT® score may be used to determine job placement within the student’s home country. As a result, ESL students all over the world are seeking certified teachers trained in IELTS™ or TOEFL iBT® preparation. This Specialization Module is designed by experts in the field to provide you with strategies to help students successfully pass the exam.

Specialization Module: Teaching IELTS and TOEFL®  Preparation

Teaching IELTS and TOEFL Preparation

Complete the Teaching IELTS and Teaching TOEFL® Preparation Module to enhance your TESOL/TESL/TEFL Teacher Training Certificate (adding 40 hours to your certificate). The IELTS and TOEFL® tests measure how well non-native speakers can read, write, speak and understand English. IELTS and TOEFL® teachers are in high demand since the results of this test can be a determining factor in a student’s future work and education.

The IELTS test stands for "International English Language Testing System." The IELTS is mainly offered in two forms, IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The General Training version is designed for those who aim to work, train, complete secondary school studies in, or immigrate to, an English-speaking country. The Academic version is intended for those who wish to enter post-secondary studies, or undertake professional registration in, an English-speaking country. The Life Skills Test is the newest version of the IELTS™. This streamlined exam assesses two sections only (Speaking and Listening) and is completed in much less time. The IELTS Life Skills is for those who need to prove that their English speaking and listening skills are at Levels A1, A2 or B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), most often for family route migrants seeking to extend their stay in the UK.

The TOEFL iBT® test stands for “Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Testing.” Previously, the test was only available in paper-based testing (PBT) or computer-based testing (CBT) format, which is no longer available. Like with the IELTS, writing the TOEFL® is most often a pre-requisite for international students hoping to study in North American post-secondary institutions. In addition, the score is used by government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing agencies to assess English proficiency.

Graduates who earn the specialization in IELTS and TOEFL® Preparation for their TESOL/TESL/TEFL Certification are in high demand among educational institutes. There is also the opportunity to teach one-on-one, since many job candidates, students, travelers, etc. require assistance in their studies. As English becomes a necessity for global communication, language proficiency testing is becoming more prominent and being qualified to assist in this process is a very marketable skill.
