It was Saturdays and Sundays for 8 hours\u2026 It went by really quickly and [it was] a lot of information, but I took notes and stuff.<\/p>\n<p>And it was generally also fun because you get to meet other people who are learning to teach English for different reasons. It\u2019s not just all young adults that are like \u201cI\u2019m going to go travel the world!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordseminars.com\/tesol-tesl-tefl-course\/\">Get Info About Our Course<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>What was your instructor like?<\/h3>\n<p>He was very calm and [provided] positive reinforcement all the time\u2026 He was calm and confident about teaching English.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest thing was he had a mock lesson that we had to teach as students. He prepped us for how to make a lesson plan and how to do the whole lesson in the classroom, and then was like \u201cOkay now I want you guys to teach a lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And because we had those giant chunks of time on weekends, we had enough for each of us to teach at least a 45-minute class, which is a very typical classroom period.<\/p>\n<p>It was great! It was very good practice because then in interviews\u2026 when people are like \u201cHave you had experience teaching\u201d you can say \u201cwell I\u2019ve done a mock lesson\u201d and for the most part\u2026 people are like \u201cyeah that\u2019s the kind of experience we want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordseminars.com\/tesol-tesl-tefl-course\/instructors\/\">Meet Our Instructors<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>How did you find your job teaching English in Japan?<\/h3>\n<p>I went through the [Job Placement Service] recruitment program and was paired up pretty quickly with a Job Placement Advisor. Pretty much right away he was like \u201cAll right! What kind of job do you want? Where do you want to go? Tell me and we can start sending out your resume.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But\u2026I was still in school. So I started my next semester and after a few emails it was like \u201cokay, we\u2019ll just hold off until I\u2019m ready to start applying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A cool thing was that my Job Placement Advisor was also like \u201cIf you want to get a job next year in August we should start applying around February-April of the same year.\u201d So he knew the period of time [when you needed to apply]\u2026which was, I think, extremely valuable because I wouldn\u2019t have any idea because different countries have different start dates, end dates, school dates.<\/p>\n<p>So it was super helpful for him to be like \u201cOkay, we should start applying in a week, or in a month, or right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordseminars.com\/job-placement\/\">Learn About Job Placement<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>What are your classes like?<\/h3>\n<p>I teach several classes and I go to several different schools as well. It\u2019s not just one class or one school that I go to.<\/p>\n<p>For me personally it\u2019s so cool to see kids of a different country and different culture because they act so different from Canadian kids, but at the same time, because they\u2019re still kids, they\u2019re still silly and they still just want to have fun.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s so fun for me to just be silly with them, and I get completely different reactions too. Like they all laugh, but they laugh for a different reason&#8230; because it\u2019s Japan and not Canada.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordseminars.com\/teaching-abroad\/where-you-can-teach\/\">See Where You Can Teach<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Can you share a day in the life of an ESL teacher?<\/h3>\n<p>I wake up in the morning and usually the night before I\u2019ll have planned out which school I need to go to because it is quite an adventure in itself figuring out how to get to my school sometimes. But yeah, so I\u2019ll wake up, get ready, go to my school about 15 minutes early, and I teach with a Japanese teacher. Each class has an \u201cFT\u201d or a Foreign Teacher and a \u201cJT\u201d which is a Japanese Teacher. We teach together.<\/p>\n<p>So I\u2019ll go 15 minutes before and help the JT clean and prep, and we\u2019ll go through the day\u2019s event which is usually between 4 to 7 classes in a day, I would say. I teach 0-15-year-olds. Our youngest class is 0-3 years, and I\u2019ve had a kid that\u2019s 6 months old [in one of my classes]. He comes in with his mom. It\u2019s mainly just games in English and songs but child language acquisition and exposure at a young age is super important for learning the language, so it\u2019s really great that the moms are like \u201cI want my kid to learn English.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordseminars.com\/teaching-abroad\/stories-from-graduates\/\">See Grad Stories<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>What was included in your contract?<\/h3>\n<p>They reimbursed me a certain amount for my flight to Japan, and then they also pay for transportation to and from work, which is really great.<\/p>\n<p>While they don\u2019t pay for my accommodations, they have a partner company that\u2026[will] help you find an apartment and pay for initial costs and stuff.<\/p>\n<p>They also assist you by taking the money out of your salary so you don\u2019t really have to worry about paying for bills and paying for the apartment> So when I get paid, my apartment money will already be deducted because I went through this partner company&#8230; I don\u2019t want to say it in a negative way, but [there&#8217;s] a lot of hand-holding. You\u2019re in a new country. You don\u2019t know how anything or everything works.<\/p>\n<p>So the first day that I got here or the day after, I was partnered up with a senior teacher, and the senior teacher brought us to the city office to get the residency card, brought us to a bank, brought us to the post office in order to get a bank account and mail, and [they] really walked us through getting what we wanted. I got a phone plan, but again with someone who knew what they were doing, and walked me through, and could speak Japanese!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordseminars.com\/teaching-abroad\/free-info-sessions\/\">Attend a Free Info Session<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Do you have any advice for people thinking about teaching English abroad?<\/h3>\n<p>Do it! That probably feels pretty clich\u00e9, but\u2026traveling internationally is\u2026I think everyone in the world should do it in order to really expand their perspective of the world and learn how other people live.<\/p>\n<p>Teaching English is something that\u2019s so sought after by so many people. I kind of feel like it\u2019s an honor.
